The Azalea Garden
The four-acre Azalea Garden, a special part of Fairmount Park, is located on Kelly Drive, just west of the Art Museum. The garden showcases azaleas, rhododendrons, and pieris, but goes beyond these spring pleasures to feature plants that delight visitors all through the year. The emphasis is on plants native to the region. There are 12 beds containing a luxuriant mixture of woody and herbaceous plants, all of which are chosen as companions to the azaleas. A dedicated group of volunteers leads the effort to keep this garden growing and glowing. They plant bulbs and flowers, prune shrubs and spent blooms, and weed and water the garden. We invite you to join in caring for this lovely garden. Meet at the pergola.

* The gardens that surround the museum provide a beautiful setting for the magnificent building, and give dignity to this important civic space. Formal arrangements of trees and hedges offer a structure to contain the blooms and complement the grand scale of the space. The planting beds are a lush blend of trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers. Meet at Lower Art Museum Drive.

Eastern State Penitentiary Terrace Garden
On the long terraces that flank the front of the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, a wonderful border of woody shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials thrives. The prison is located on Fairmount Avenue between Corinthian and 22nd Streets. This intriguing garden is truly an urban gem and is primarily maintained by volunteer efforts, all 8,000 square feet of it! This sun-soaked, south-facing location creates a challenging and rewarding experience for its volunteer gardeners. The plantings provide seasonal interest year-long, and also serve as habitat for birds, bees and butterflies.
Meet at the entrance on Fairmount Avenue.
