Free (for a Limited Time) Resource on African Plants

Aluka, a digital repository of scholarly information for and about Africa, maintains a database on African plants. This database includes text and images from such sources as Curtis’s Botanical Magazine and Useful Plants of West Tropical Africa. Be sure to take advantage of this great resource while it lasts. It will be freely accessible until June 30, 2008. After this date, Aluka will continue to be available via participating institutions.

A Parasitic Rediscovery

In 2006, Dr. George Yatskievych, of the Missouri Botanical Garden, rediscovered a parasitic plant of an undescribed genus that had not been seen since 1985. This plant, native to Mexico, lost its chlorophyll through evolution and so is completely dependent upon its host for survival. The plant will be formally identified by name in an article by Dr. Yatskievych later this year. For more information, see Missouri Botanical Garden’s press release.

Dahlia Exhibit in Library Extended Through July 30

“Dahlia Roots: from Moctezuma to Madrid and Beyond”
Through Wednesday, July 30

The Spanish Conquerors in the sixteenth century were seeking gold in Meso-America, but they were also on a horticultural hunt for new foods and medicines. This exhibit draws on material from the McLean Library's book and seed catalogue collections. The library is open 9 to 5, Monday through Friday and is located on the first floor of PHS headquarters at 100 N. 20th Street.

Garden Q & A

Our gardening experts volunteer their time to answer your questions. Use the form on our web site.

Q.        I have read about Knock out Roses. I want to buy one. Do they need a lot of sun. I can only give it partial. Do they look just like a regular rose? Thank you. Marilyn B., Upper Darby, PA

A.         Knock Out roses seem to be wonderful landscape plants, and much less fussy than other roses.  They are easy to grow, are disease resistant, and long blooming.  They will do fine with about 4 hours of sun. They do not look like hybrid tea roses, but they appear to be attractive shrub roses.  Click here to visit a web site that will provide additional information.
