New Book Offers Case Studies in Collaborative Success
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Heritage Conservancy are proud to announce the publication of Deep Lessons on Collaboration, an educational book that shows how collaborative efforts among organizations and communities can pave the way for progressive change and growth.
Written by highly experienced consultants and practitioners for individuals and leaders who want to learn about the complexities of collaboration – as well as expand their choices in constructively managing important and challenging issues – the book presents six in-depth case studies, including several which involve environmental programs and natural resources.
With each case detailing real-world challenges and solutions to complex, even polarizing situations involving not-for-profit and government partners, Deep Lessons on Collaboration explores the layered nuances of collaborative work to reveal what works.
The contributors share their experiences about communication, decision-making, problem-solving, planning and the role of power in collaboration.
Editors Patrick Sanaghan and Nancy Aronson point out that today’s complex problems demand that we work together to find solutions.
“The lessons learned can be applied to many situations that involve cross-boundary work and inter-organizational partnerships and alliances,” Sanaghan said.
Through the case studies, this insightful book offers effective strategies and promotes a healthy exchange of ideas and community participation – the critical ingredients of positive change.
The case studies include a look at the ongoing partnership of PHS and the Philadelphia Department of Recreation to reclaim and maintain neighborhood parks throughout the city.
“We came together to clean up a neglected public space. We wanted to transform an abandoned landscape and we all became transformed in the process,” explained contributor Joan Reilly, Senior Director of the PHS urban revitalization program, Philadelphia Green.
The Heritage Conservancy’s Jeffrey Marshall, Vice President of Resource Protection, and Sharon Young, Resource Protection Coordinator, are the authors of a case study that helped property owners and municipalities preserve threatened open spaces through collaboration.
“By working together to create a Lasting Landscape, a comprehensive, collaborative approach to conserving natural resources, communities can build a sense of place to coalesce interest and energy around the preservation and sustainability of these resources,” Young said.
